While fossil fuels will continue to be a primary energy supply, there is an increasing need for other sources of energy supply, for reasons of sufficient supply and environmental protection. Many of the speakers discussed the need for stronger co-operation between governments on a global and regional basis, as well as more effective relations between government and industry. This is needed to foster more effective and rapid development of alternative sources of energy so that under-developed regions can have full access to energy.

A morning round table, chaired by Fatih Birol, Chief Economist and Director of the International Energy Agency, discussed how mounting concerns about climate change and challenges of increasing oil production are prompting the energy industry to dramatically increase its efforts to broaden the energy mix. The group of five energy-related company executives discussed major, conventional sources of energy, including the potential of coal to remain a leading source of energy to produce electrical energy, and to do so in an environmentally friendly way.

During the session, Vinay Kumar Singh of Northern Coalfields Ltd., India, explained how coal is an essential tool of development in India that is used extensively, while trying to minimize the environmental impact. Theirry Vandal of Hydro-Qu
